Last week I had the privilege of photographing the Rethink Romp, supporting breast cancer awareness in Calgary.  This event was a tremendous success and was a particularly fun project for myself.  The romp was held at the Art Gallery of Calgary (which would be a great place to hold  wedding reception for all of you brides out there!) on Thursday October 23.  The building itself is an historic building on Stephen Ave, and is a beautifully unique space on the inside.  I personally loved the way that all three levels were connected via the open staircase so that no portion of the event felt alienated from the rest.  The atmosphere of the room was very upbeat and there was plenty of fun had by all.  Guests were treated to massages, hair styling and makeup, followed by an optional fashion photo shoot (photography by P.O.A.).  It was a great opportunity for me to do what I love best, capturing the moment!  I have posted a few photos here and have the rest will be on our proofing website here.

Dramatic Night Photography

So I was browsing through some past images because I have been far too busy to create new ones lately and I came across these photos of Downtown Calgary at night.  I love night photography and I wish that I would go out more often at night.  I love the drama of the light at night and the emotions that it can evoke.  I also love the compositions that are available at night that sometimes aren't possible during the day because of the contrasty lighting.  These images were taken with my Nikon D200 and I was somewhat impressed with the quality of the images.  Typically at night a longer exposure is necessary and as a result there is an increase of digital "noise".  I recently bought a new camera, the Nikon D300 which uses a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor.  The CMOS sensor coupled with a new image processor is supposed to greatly reduce the appearance of noise, especially with higher ISO's.  I will update some new night photos as soon as I have a chance.  I have a wedding coming up in a few weeks that will consist mainly of night photography after the ceremony.  I am looking forward to experimenting with light and dramatic compositions.  I will also post some of those wedding photos from downtown Calgary as well.

Hello and welcome to the Heninger Photography blog.  I hope to use this blog as a way to share my passion for photography.  I have been a photographer for 6 years now and I have to say that I continue to love it more and more.  After 6 years I can safely say that my favorite subject to photograph is people.  I love the whole human experience.  When Sheila and I travel, I am always drawn to the people in each culture.  When I take my camera downtown in Calgary, I love to observe and photograph strangers passing by.  I am intrigued by the emotion that all humans share through their body language and facial expressions.  I love weddings because that emotion is so tangible.  I enjoy getting to know the families of the bride and groom and I am fascinated as I watch the connections between them all.  I can often anticipate certain emotions and enjoy capturing those moments throughout the wedding day.  I also love the more technical side of photographing people.  I have learned to use the magic of light to emphasize expressions and movements.  I recently had the privilege to work for Candace Bates of Seraphim Beauty (www.seraphimbeauty.ca).  She is an extraordinary make-up artist here in Calgary and she hired me to produce some images for her website.  It is amazing how make-up and clothing can shape the emotions of those wearing them.  Each of the 4 models that I worked with adapted to their particular "look" with ease.  It was fun to hear them suggest ideas or even create their own spontaneous poses as part of their character.  I particularly enjoyed using lighting to emphasize different styles.  I have learned a lot over the years about the way that light affects mood.  In photography, light is key.  I have attached a few photos from this session for all of you to enjoy!  I hope to update this blog with current projects or ideas as often as possible.  Enjoy!
